Ultimate Guide to Medusa Piercings

Ultimate Guide to Medusa Piercings

Is The Medusa Piercing Right For You?

It’s time to get another piercing, you say? If you’re bored of the typical nose and lip piercings, the philtrum piercing option might sound intriguing to you. Also known as the Medusa, this particular piercing is becoming more and more popular these days for everyone.

There are two other variations of the medusa piercing; the double and the vertical. With the first type, the philtrum is pierced twice, one on top of the other, to allow for two different studs. The vertical variation is different because what might seem like two holes is really one, with the philtrum being perforated vertically.

All of this sounds great, but let’s get into more details regarding whether or not this would be the right choice for you. This guide will go over all aspects of the medusa piercing, such as what to expect before, during and after the job is done.

Before You Hop in the Chair

You’ve decided to go for it and get your philtrum pierced. How should you prepare for this? One part of the prep is tooth care, even before the procedure. Both brushing and flossing your pearly whites is so important. The entire mouth area should be squeaky clean, because neglected teeth means more bacteria, and this can greatly increase the risk of infection.

After this boring yet important step, you can start to look into the cost of the procedure. The Medusa piercing can range anywhere from $40 to $80, and the cost of jewelry would be an extra cost. Be wary of studios offering low cost piercings with non implant grade materials. When thinking about the first piece of jewelry to wear, the labret stud is usually the best option. Here comes the fun part! There are so many colours to choose from! You can go wild with this!

What to Expect During your Medusa Piercing Session

Pain level is always a big question when it comes to piercings. Will it hurt?  How much will it hurt? Pain level is going to be very different for each person, but this article will talk about the general opinion found online. It has been said that a sharp pain is felt when the needle first punctures the tissue. This is most likely similar to that of any other piercing and is also over within the blink of an eye.

Medusa Piercing Aftercare

For the few days after the fact, there might be a dull throbbing pain in the area of the hole. This is also quite normal. Each aftercare step deserves its very own section of the article, so here goes!

Firstly, it is important that the stud stays completely intact while the area is healing, in order to avoid getting an infection. During the first week or two, you need to eat and drink carefully to make sure the piercing doesn’t get irritated.

Some Fun Activities are Out for a While – sorry

Sadly, some day to day activities may also be potentially dangerous for the wound. Kissing and smoking may not be the greatest ideas during the first week, and yes, even drinking can be harmful. Alcohol dehydrates, and dehydration is a no-no for this situation. For this same reason, Swimming and submersion of any sort cannot go near the area, so swimming can be added to this list.

Cleaning and Sanitation

Now comes the cleaning steps! With the medusa piercing, the inside and outside of the wound need to be taken care of separately. Beginning with the cleaning of the outside, there are a few steps to take. As recommended use a sterile saline for irrigation purposes and mild, alcohol and scent free soap for cleaning the outside.

Once this is all done, it is time to clean the inside of the mouth. Rinsing after meals with a non-alcoholic mouthwash helps clear away bacteria, and all that other fun stuff. Lastly, it’s said that using a new toothbrush after the procedure can also be helpful.

Other than all of the above, it is also important to make sure that the philtrum is kept clean for at least the first six to twelve weeks after the procedure. Don’t worry, there’s nothing else to worry about! You are now all set to enjoy your new piercing!
